Picture a rendering plant in California’s Central Valley. Not a real one — a composite, built from today’s landscape. Out front, a thick, concentrated process-water stream that’s too expensive to treat. Out back, an older waste lagoon that is a closure and monitoring obligation that never quite ends. It looks like one problem. In fact, it is two, and they arrive on two different invoices.
In Episode 10 of the NexusInnovest Insider Brief, Lily Kim draws on the Substack article “The Second Cut” to test the GH2E thesis against a second feedstock beyond dairy: rendering, slaughterhouse and meatpacking waste. She walks through the scale of the water challenge, an operating beef plant that already recycles most of its own water using a treatment train that includes electrocoagulation, and why the 2025 withdrawal of EPA’s proposed meat and poultry wastewater rule does not end the pressure. State permits and groundwater rules tighten, site by site, regardless of what Washington. is prepared to do.
Then comes the distinction that most listeners will take away from this episode: a one-time lagoon remediation is a project with an end point, while treatment-as-a-service is a contract that renews. This broadcast separates Track A — proven electrocoagulation and treatment-as-a-service, the attainable and better-supported path — from Track B, hydrogen yield at scale, which remains contingent on feedstock characterisation that has not yet been done.
Underwriting-grade candour, no promotional gloss: where the evidence says “not yet established,” Lily says so plainly.
